Happy IDAHOBIT 2022

May 17th marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

This year’s theme, “Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Rights,” is particularly timely. In 2022, we live in a world where LGBTIQ+ individuals are routinely denied the right to make decisions for their bodies and their health, and where legal and societal protections of our bodily integrity, safety and security are few. As UN personnel with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex characteristics, we continue to face tough decisions related to our careers, our safety and security, the safety and security of our families, and our ability to access comprehensive and dignified medical care. Many of us have little support in our workplaces as we navigate these and other challenges related to being LGBTIQ+ in the UN system.

We know that we are stronger together. We must continue to support one another as we resist homophobia, biphobia, intersexphobia and transphobia in UN workplaces. In particular, we must support our colleagues who are living and working in locations where the bodies, lives and rights of LGBTIQ+ people are most at risk, and we must support our colleagues who are most at risk. This year’s theme serves as a reminder of those risks and is a call for us to continue our critical work towards meaningful reform in the UN system.

This IDAHOBIT 2022, we encourage you to share our statement and poster (PDF or JPG) on your social media accounts and across your organizations. This year’s poster, generously provided by OHCHR, is attached in English as a .jpg and .pdf and will be available on our website in other languages soon. We also encourage you to share with us the events that are taking place within your entities and duty stations.

Happy International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia!
